Frozen Drains in Windsor | What to Check Before You Call
Pipes freeze, gullies flood and drains block every winter in Windsor's SL4 postcodes. Here's what to check before you call a drainage engineer.
Windsor winters aren't Arctic, but they're awkward. A few nights below zero, a warm spell, then heavy rain, and suddenly a gully in Dedworth is backing up or a shared drain in Clewer Village is frozen solid at the joint. The Thames flood plain doesn't help. Neither does the age of the drainage under some of the older terraces in Eton or Spital.
Here's what to work through before you call anyone.
Outside the property
Check your gully gratings now, not when it's raining. Leaf debris compacts over autumn and acts as a dam the moment water hits it. Lift the grating, scoop out the silt and leaves by hand, flush with a bucket of warm water. Two minutes. Gullies in Cranbourne and Datchet clog faster than people expect given the tree cover.
Look at your downpipe shoes. The short elbow where a downpipe meets the gully at ground level. Ice forms there first because it's shaded, holds moisture and sits right at ground level. If the shoe is cracked or the joint is loose, a hard frost will open it further. You'll see it weeping in a thaw.
Manhole covers: clear them of ice before it bonds. A frozen manhole lid you can't lift is a problem when you need to diagnose a blockage fast. Sprinkle a small amount of grit salt around the frame in advance. Don't pour boiling water over a cast iron cover, the thermal shock can crack older frames, and there are plenty of those in Old Windsor and Eton.
Shared drains on Victorian terraces. If you're on a terrace in Clewer North or Clewer East, your drain almost certainly connects to your neighbour's before it reaches the public sewer. One person's blocked outlet is everyone's backed-up toilet. Worth a conversation with the neighbours in November, not January.
Inside the property
Pipes in unheated spaces freeze first. Garages, cellar runs, under suspended timber floors, outbuildings. If a pipe runs through an unheated void, wrap it in lagging before the first frost. Closed-cell foam lagging costs almost nothing and is available at any builders' merchant on the Dedworth Road.
Know where your internal rodding eye is. If the drain does block, having quick access to the rodding eye saves time and saves money. Most are under the kitchen sink, in the utility room, or outside the back wall. Find it now. Clear any junk in front of it.
Don't put fats down the drain. This is year-round advice, but it matters more in winter because cold temperatures cause fat to solidify faster in the pipe, narrowing it before a blockage sets properly. A partial fat restriction plus frozen ground conditions equals a complete blockage under pressure during a thaw.

None of those show on the surface. A camera is the only honest diagnosis.
If a pipe does freeze
Don't apply direct flame to plastic waste pipes. Ever. Warm the area gently using a hairdryer on a low setting, starting from the exposed tap or fitting end and working back. If it's a buried run that's frozen, you can't thaw it yourself. Call a drainage engineer and leave it running slowly once the freeze breaks to confirm flow before you assume it's fine.
